re hole in railings
Hi everyone! I noticed a square hole in the black railings opposite the Bull pub in Sutton by the beck. The hole is about a foot or so above the wall and actualy has a square metal frame sitting in the railings. Does anyone know what that was for ? Its a little mystery for me and mine! Can anyone solve it for us?
Many thanks

Basil.

Basil,

When I was a lad, there was a hinged cover over the hole and painted on it were the letters EWS - Emergency Water Supply. It enabled the fire service to have access to water in the beck should the need arise ie. when the Luftwaffe blitzed Sutton.

Somewhere? I have a list of all the emergency water supplies in Cowling during WW2 - as a young man working for his uncle John Greenwoods plumbers and blacksmiths and for also Cowling Water Co.- my Dad had to paint EWS in yellow letters on each one. Joan
